Do you think you might be
depressed?
 We know that people
with depression do not all
experience the same symptoms.
The severity, frequency and
duration of symptoms will vary
depending on the individual and his
or her particular illness.  Examine
the symptoms below as these can
indicate that you have depression
and are in need of treatment.  Or
maybe you are concerned about
someone you love.

Symptoms include:
persistent sad, anxious or
"empty" feelings
feelings of hopelessness or
pessimism
feelings of guilt,
worthlessness or helplessness
irritability, restlessness
loss of interest in activities or
hobbies
fatigue and decreased energy
difficulty concentrating,
remembering details or
making decisions
insomnia or excessive
sleeping
overeating or appetite loss
thought of suicide, suicide
attempts
persistent aches or pain,
headaches or digestive
problems

If you or a loved one is experiencing the symptoms listed above, you may be depressed.
You should know that depression is highly treatable and the earlier you seek treatment, the more
effective it is.  The most common treatments for depression are medication and psychotherapy.  Recent
research indicates that yoga and other meditative practices can also reduce symptoms.
What to expect when you see a psychotherapist.  Your therapist will discuss any family history of
depression, and get a complete history of symptoms

He or she will ask about:

when your symptoms started, how long they have lasted, their severity and whether they have
occurred before.
drug or alcohol problems
any thoughts about death
any previous attempts at suicide
